Car hire and self drive, or not!
Car hire is a relative cheap and safe option.
Travelling around Cape Town is easy, as the roads are well marked and in an excellent condition.
Renting a car will also mean that you will be able to explore Cape Town as well as many of the
drives
that I will be telling you about.
[Cheap car hire]
All this will take place at your own pace.
With many of the world's top car hire agencies present in Cape Town, it is also surprisingly affordable to hire a car.
There are also various other ways of getting around Cape Town.
The cheapest will probably be to use the local minibus taxis.
This is however not the safest option as many of these taxi's are overloaded, whilst the drivers speed around to get as many trips per day, as possible.
In the city bowl, another very cheap way of getting around will be a taxi service called the Rikkis.
Many of the city's destinations are linked by rail. Again, this is not a very safe option at present, especially after dark.
Having said that, the South African government is on a big drive to upgrade the public transport system ahead of the
2010 World cup soccer tournament.
Various bus tours are also available. These operators run a safe and reliable service with which it is easy to see all the major tourist attractions.
City Sightseeing Tours, better known as "Topless Tours", are a favourite with many Capetonians.

Do's and Don'ts
- Always ensure that you have enough fuel.
- Ensure that you drive in the safer areas. Ask if you are unsure.
- Park in well lit areas at night.
- Leave valuables at your place of accommodation, otherwise locked away.
- Many guides have maps - use them.
- When lost, use Table Mountain as a reference.
- Do not pick up hitchhikers.
|
The above-mentioned "rules" would apply to any major city in the world.
The bottom line is therefore,
use your common sense.
